This carb was used on the later-model Classic Mini's with the 998cc engines and is a great upgrade from the HS4 style or if you want to improve fuel economy on a 1275. The HIF is a far superior design than the early HS style that uses an internal float, throttle shaft seals, and improved adjusting screws. It will come jetted to fit a 1000cc engine, but can be fitted to any upgraded or 1275cc engine with a different needle. Comes with all new seals, gaskets, needle & seat, and jet tube assembly. All parts are inspected, ultrasonically cleaned, and polished. The air filter to carb elbow will not be included unless you specify in the comment field you need one.

Question:
I am looking for a leaner needle for my 91 Mini 998, It's a single HS4. It's dead stock down to the air filter. In my area we run from 4500' to above 8000'. Currently, the car is running rich so id like to lean it out. If possible, please suggest a range of needles that I could try.

Question:
‘74 Mini 1000 (stock) with SU HS4 - having issues with cold engine hard starts. Timing is confirmed and engine was good when warm, but takes a long time to start and warm up. Almost seems like it has no fuel - wondering if there is an internal leak somehow that drains the fuel bowl... New mechanical fuel pump and new fuel tank. Car has 49k original miles. Wondering if a carb rebuild is in order or an HIF38 replacement might be a better answer? Can I use the stock manifold and air cleaner with an HIF38? Maybe an electric fuel pump as well? Thanks
Answer:
Engines do require more fuel when cold. Is your Mini equipped with a choke? is it working? can you try starting it manually choking it with your hand? test for fuel flow at the carburetor inlet? Any air leaks would exaggerate this issue, so gaskets, carb rebuilt, manifold air leaks ect. Good place to start.  And just to let you know we do SU rebuilds for Minimania and have a few options for you. You can send your carb in to me to get rebuilt. I also have exchange carbs in stock, or we could do a HIF38 upgrade, but I will need some more info on your mini to do that.
Feel free to give us a call if you have any questions or need help trouble shooting your carb.

Question:
Hello I’m wanting to fit a reconditioned or new Hif38 Carb to my 1960 948 Morris minor . It’s standard apart from having a recently reconditioned 12G295 head . I’ll be fitting extractors and a Maniflow 1.5 2 muffler exhaust system. I already have a Maniflow water heated manifold to be used for the Hif38 . Would I need a different throttle cable for the Hif38 or would my existing minor one fit . What else would I need in the way of linkage or brackets? . I’d need the spacer between manifold and carb. With this info could you determine the appropriate needle to be fitted . I need to increase airflow to get the most out of the cooper 12g295 head . Perhaps I could purchase other needles to try once I get the carb . Kindest regards
Answer:
Hi,
I do all of the SU carb rebuilds so I can custom build a HIF38 carb with what ever needle you want .  I have a few I could suggest to start with.  If you look at kit MMKT0401 , you will see   all of the components you will need, but I can also sell them individually.
Best if you give me a call and I can work up a bid for you.
