Agree with Tim.  I have a battery cutoff switch too.....the cheapie one on the battery post. Not the best, but at least it's a step in the right direction.

For the problem you had a cut off switch is the fix. Your "short" was really a stuck switch making the starter stay running, if you had a circuit breaker it has to be capable of a bit more than the max load of the starter in order to use the starter, which would not have stopped the starter.

My starter solenoid switch got stuck the other day on my early classic Mini. I had to rush back and disconnect the battery. There was a faint burnt smell and the battery cable was warm. I've replaced the solenoid switch.

A friend who seems quite knowledgeable regarding auto electronics, recommended I install a circuit breaker in case something like this happened again. (please see pic, hoping ok to post pic as comparable item doesn't seem to be available from out host). A circuit breaker appeals to me as it seems it might prevent some damage if a short or the like were to happen again, and one that 's not as obvious when it's occurring.

A mechanic at my local auto electric repair shop recommended a battery cut off switch only. If a circuit breaker is recommended, which amperage would be recommended as they come in various amperage capacities, 50,100,150. Thanks for any input.
