I can't speak to your particular experiences, but I can contribute that there is a HUGE online scam presence on the MM for sale site, even with my very few sale postings I've had over the years. Most of the efforts I have received on here or other sites like craigslist or similar seem to be attempts to gather personal information, I'm guessing to help paint a more complete picture/profile of the seller. So like putting IP addresses with names with emails with street addresses with phone numbers and the like.
Meeting people in person at a public address really is about the only way I can weed that stuff out. Doesn't seem the way most people want to do "classified ad style" business nowadays, though.
Lately the scam I keep falling prey to is one that has an item posted cheap, but not unreasonably or ridiculously cheap but on the lower end of "fair", and when you reach out to the seller there is a response asking for my direct email so they can send pictures (that I didn't request in the first place) or are answering a question I didn't ask.
Good luck with your dealings and please post back if you figure out either way if it is or isn't a scammer so others can be wary.
