fMix.. there is new chief legal counsel at NHTSA.. but I doubt the MBs. BMW.  Ferrari would ever allow this to happen.. as they are AFRAID they might lose some Dinero.. this is what happened.  on 1 Jan 88. when DOT and EPA came up with ICIs. before 1 jan 88 .  it was only FIVE years.. to import personal import without EPA. you still had to do the DOT.. which was only about $1000..  later bc

The nice thing about Japanese cars is since they have those strict laws, tons of cars end up in auction and go for cheap.  There are a few JDM cars I would love to have but I have family and mortgage to pay for.  Maybe some day I'll add a Mini ERA Turbo, a Cappuccino, and an Autozam AZ-1 to the collection.  I just hope car laws still allow imports 10+ years from now.

bluedragon.. yea. huge demand for the R 34s and R 35s.. they are legal in Canada. now.. this is why CBP gives the mini owners so much grief about importing a RHD car..( just ask Mini Mover about his problems with CBP Inspector S.G.... over RHD cars at the canada /USA border..  JDM motors in charleston sc.. recently BUSTED by CBP.. vin fraud.. later bc

If it turns out that there's a big problem with JDM imports being stolen in Japan then having their identities masked to sell them out of the country, then the Japanese imports would get the same scrutiny. (It also would be true if people were trying to bring in 2005 JDM cars by giving them the ID of a 1994 or earlier car.)

As far as I know though, that's not a big problem right now. Probably it's a lot harder to forge the ID of a modern car than a classic Mini, and where would they get the VIN/ID to swap with? (Japan having very strict rules on scrapping non-running cars, so there's no stockpile of hulks to take VIN numbers from.)

Fmix..  CBP looks at every classic mini and land rover defender..  for the OEM engine.. OEM glass.. OEM seatbelts. any reason to SEIZE them.. but CBP does NOT seem to care about Jap cars for some reason..  and the east coast ports a LOT worse the west coast ports for SEIZUREs for some reason?? later bc

I'm curious if the OEM rule is only for Minis or not.  There are a few imports around Seattle Washington importing cars from Japan and they range from stock to heavily built.  Mostly I see them bringing in Skylines, Silvias, 180sx, and RX-7.  But the range of modifications are across the board.
