Found the problem. The circlip holding the whole bendix spring/washer assembly onto the armature shaft had broken and allowed it to slip outward, away from the body of the starter. Don't want to think what the result would have been if I installed it and the whole mess let go inside the flywheel cover somewhere in Utah.

Let me know if you need a starter. I'm in Seattle and have several I need to move to new homes. You may even get to choose your date code.

I think the spring is there as a heavy rebound element for when the pinion gear is kicked out of engagement with the ring gear. That suggests the spring being a little bit loose may be OK. However....
The only loose springs I have seen have been broken springs. Were this my car I would replace the spring or the whole starter prior to taking a long trip. It's not like you can expect spares to be available in parts stores.

How much axial play of the large bendix spring and washer assembly located at the end of the armature shaft is allowed? Mine is pretty sloppy and spins freely. All of the others that I've checked are nice and tight. My starter-r-r-r-r guy says its fine but he's not the guy who will be driving to Snowmass in about a week! Input?
