Thanks guys
I have been doing some heavy internet searching for a car,but nothing yet.
I am finding from a cost point of view the Japanese Mini makes sense, but if I can find a good relatively solid car in Canada or US thats also possible
If anyone knows of anything, feel free to advise
Thanks
Shawn(Larry)

I think what Larry doesn't understand is that Jap Spec Minis were built in England, pretty much the same car as a UK Mini. The differences came in the fact that Japan customers wanted air conditioning, and some of the trim items were different. Wing mirrors for instance, were once common in the UK, but evolved into door mirrors for UK cars. Japan still requires wing mirrors. When fuel injection came along to the UK Cooper in 92, they sent the same spec cars to Japan. When they went to Mpi version, the Japanese continued with the Spi version. Anyway, the engine and body components would all be the same as UK Minis and very much available. A/C parts and such maybe not so easy. All things considered though, I would take a carb car over a fuel injected model any day. Which brings up a good point, that the Spi cars can be changed over to a carb, but the Mpi cars can't. When they crap out (and they will) you have very few options. Good luck with the search.

That depends if you want a 998cc or 1275cc, the 998's were all carbed some 1275's were carbed but all i have seen from Japan are SPI.
Parts are not an issue with SPI's and most of the issues you may have with them are usually easily sorted.

Thanks for the help guys
As far as a JDM Mini ,should I try to get a carb mini ,or is a SPI version the way to go?

I am not sure about SPI ,as far as parts avialability and technical support etc.
Thanks
Shawn

There seem to be quite a few SPI cars available in CA from Japan.
There is one near to me available if interested, but I think a bit on the high $ side.
Lots of Jap spec MINIs in AB also it seems.....where in CA are you?.

They made Jap spec Mini's with carbs and regular electronics just like the UK ones but most are 998's not the 1275 that the US seems to like.
The 998's run well and are fine unless you plan on doing a lot of miles on the highway then the gearing of the later 1275's help.

Welcome to the forum Larry.  Japan mini's usually have AC, seems parts are a little hard to come by. ECU's, engine sensors, scan tools for code reading/clearing are not real common. There may be other hard to find items, but there is a price at which you can buy any of it. Your right, as rust free as you can find for any year is the way to go. In my case I can wrench ok, but I cannot do any real heavy body repair, so I am biased. Good luck on the search!

Hi Folks
Shawn here,just joined.
I owned a couple of Minis roughly 20 or so years ago, back then all I could afford were rusty Canadian Mini 1000s.
I am interested in getting another, but I see times have changed(and prices!)
I see the trend seems to be importing Japan Minis, but would rather just find a solid rust free(I know ,not possible)
My question would be relating to parts availability for the Japan units,as opposed to the classic units or are they the same for the most part.
Sorry for the long post
Thanks
Shawn
