You are right and they are wrong. Changing the final drive gears will change the speed of the 3rd motion shaft in the gearbox. That means you either have to change the speedo drive gears or have the speedometer recalibrated.
I suppose it was an oversight missed by their fact checker. It's worth writing the editor so they can correct it in a future issue.

The November 2018 issue of Mini World has a nice article on differentials; except, in two places it is indicated that if only the differential ratio is changed (say 3.765 to 3.44), one does not have to change the speedometer or have the speedometer recalibrated.
Maybe I'm missing something. Can anyone explain it to me?
