I have only used and known of the code reader i mentioned but as long as it has the spi cables i am sure it would work ok.

The Japanese Mini's were spi based but after late 1996 they did switch to an MPI block with a coil pack and crank fired ignition complete with the spi throttle body set up keeping the radiator side mounted so the a/c compressor could still be mounted up front.

Hello werewolf, when I reached that intersection in the road of ''mini'', I did stop and ponder for quite a while..deciding which direction to go...will keep going this way for now. Option to change fuelling method can be revisited later if need be.  I have spent time (too much) looking at the Japanese sourced parts option, conclusion is that its too difficult...language barrier and no international shipping options and just plain no reply to inquiries...its too bad as there is a vast supply of very good mini stuff over there...even updated substitute SPi potentiometer kits....   Cheers

Malsal, found a SPi diagnostic tool package on the auction and its on its way. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/CRYPTON-ACT1-FAULT-CODE-READER-SCAN-TOOL-ROVER-MINI-1-3-SPI/283192471379   Not sure if its a valid link now that its a sold item? Its a Mac tools branded Crypton with patch cables, SPi card and pdf instruction cd. Not planning on getting rid of the mini's anytime soon, so figured it would be a useful tool to have around . Thanks for the heads up on that info.

If you fit the used potentiometer you will need to clear any codes stored. With the spi set up the only way to clear them is with the Sykes Pickavant code reader, disconnecting the battery does not work as the codes will still be there.
The miniforum.co.uk has some good information on the spi system.

Thanks for the info for the whole system option, werewolf.  Malsal, I have tried your reset method previously with no improvement, I am pretty sure its just to reset the ECU as far as I know? I have located a used potentiometer that I should receive in next few weeks...just in time to put car away for the winter  Thanks everyone

To reset them i have been told that you turn on the ignition (do not start) and slowly press the accelerator to the floor and release it the same way, you do this about 12 times and it should be reset.
No harm in trying.

Depending on what's wrong with it, it may be repairable. It would require careful opening to see what the issue is, but they are simple devices. No loss in trying if you have a dead one.
