And now #45 has targeted China with big tariffs.  China says, we will hit back.  Trumped up protectionism running amok.

What the current POTUS is up to is a worry for all engaged in trade with non-domestic markets.

When the Clown was elected we expected a Circus...now going mad.

The dairy tariff mentioned is a perfect example of what's wrong with the current trade discussion. It makes for great print by Trump, but it's a needed protection for Canada and adds up to next to nothing of the total trade . Do you remember US Government Cheese, in the 1980'? big 5 pound block's of the stuff all over the place. It was the result of massive overproduction of Milk in the US. My dad is an industrial food broker, and told me that equally massive amounts of dairy whey powder was being produced at that time from the excess milk, as it is the most stable form of milk, a food/feed ingredient that can be stored a few years, drove down the price to next to nothing. The real goal of trade is to be fair to all involved, to look at a trade item will never give you the real picture.

I'm a supporter of free trade as well, but I admit I didn't realize the EU levies a 10% tariff on USA cars while the reciprocal from the USA is only 2.5%. That seems wrong to me as a citizen of the USA. What's the justification from the EU on that? That Germany is a developing country that needs to get its automotive industry off to a successful launch so it can stand on its own two feet?

mini mover. I am just waiting.. when the fixer ( Cohen) is indicted in DC and NYC very soon and as he looks to be out of cash. and can NOT pay his current legal team according to the Washington Post and NY TIMES today.. change in DC might be sooner than two years.. I was told according to Article 301.. import tariff on parts/ CKDs cars from china will be 35% as of 15 June 18.. and this might go to 300%. as this is what the chinese charge to import car from USA like Jeep Cherokee. in 2018.. I can see import tariff on cars from Canada going to 10% from 2.5% with the month.. I think DJT will real good in orange jump suit with DOC on the back..( dept of corrections) later bc ps.. cuba is real nice .. any day of the week. I am been several times..

Steve, I'd be happy to post a few for you. Email address in my profile is good. I might even learn something about building engines.

I would love to see some pic's and video. My mini with just a near stock 1275 A+ seems to run very well. Other than I have to remind myself not to try to downshift passing a car going 50(80) in a 55(90), just mat the pedal, and the engine keeps pulling really nicely well past 70mph or 110 kph/4000 rpm. Sorry no track experience at this time. Show me more! Go CANADA!

By the way, Pelee island, Canada is 150 years old this year, why its a year younger than the rest of Canada, I don't know, probably some hassle with the US.

Quite right Steve.
A lot of Canadians (not just politicians) are offended, insulted and angry about the callous attitude and remarks by DJT and his cronies/henchmen. A lot of US citizens are likewise embarrassed, including more and more US congressmen and senators. The 'discussion' here in this thread so far has generally been one of agreement, not animosity or politics. Much of what DJT spouts about Canada-US trade is sensationalist and factually incorrect.
For instance, the "270% on dairy" is only part of the story. True it is a tariff to protect our domestic milk production, which is a managed industry with quotas. The purpose of the quota system is to prevent over-production/supply, providing a stable market for our producers. What DJT doesn't say is that the US milk production is unregulated, resulting in huge oversupply that the federal government "protects" by paying farmers to dump the over-production on their fields. So, even if Wisconsin et al, had free access to the Canadian market it would not be significant in their overall overproduction problem. Meanwhile DJT is messing up steel and aluminum with Canada, where the US happens to enjoy a trade surplus - Canada imports more steel from the US than it imports.

There is room for direct conversations on the tariffs. The idea of removing all tariffs appeals greatly to my pure free-market thinking. There are problems on trade between the US and Canada that need fixing. However, you can be direct without being rude, so what I do apologize for is the insults, bad faith and offensive suggestion that Canada is a national security risk from an administration that lies and cannot be trusted.

Scary times my friends!
Many of us in Canada know that what Trump said about Trudeau IS 100% true and it's about time somebody gave Justin a wakeup call. He won't get anything like that here. What we do not know is why he said it or what really motivated his timing? As far as sucking up to dictators go, one could look at BHO's love for Chavez, his desire to be "more flexible after the election' ...for Putin,....and a $150 billion dollar bribe to the Mullahs of Iran.,... It is all politics, with Trump it's all about getting stuff done. Sometime you kiss butt....sometime you kick butt!!  If it works with Mini Me...then great. If it doesn't....well he's not worse off the previous presidents who signed deals with Korea and then let them build the bomb. Personally I accept this is all way above my pay grade and it's cutting into my Mini time. About to go away on a "Mini Vacation" in it for a couple of days. Meep Meep!!
