You have a waxstat jet Darren they always end up giving you problems throw it in the garbage.
You need a waxstat conversion jet kit most Mini vendors sell them and yes that one will be red.

I think I’m must be losing my marbles Spitz. The jet is not red , it’s the same colour of bare alloy as the carb. It is ( obviously ) tube shaped, with the bottom ~ 3/4 of an inch tapering out to a width of about an inch. The tag is marked - FZX 1146, and bellow those numbers is 7 WK 835. I don’t know if that tells you anything or not Spitz. Maybe I’ll learn some more tommorow when I strip it down ( ? ) Cheers Spitz ( you must like Spitfires too ? I like them- almost bought one years ago butfound a good ragtop TR7 first. Unlike most of the negative stuff we hear, it was a very good, dependable car for the 7 years I owned it- rust free too ).

Hi Spitz. Yes, I typed that ( jet position ) with the choke pulled out. So it is just as you say, except the cable doesn’t hang much, a bit, but mainly the jet only drops all the way down if the choke is all the way in. Pull the coke out just a bit, and when you push it back in the jet drops properly. But if I pull the choke out ( I’ll say 3/4 of the way ) and then push it in about an inch ( for instance ) and the jet doesn’t move. I had other things to do today, so to,morrow I’ll be pulling the carb apart for a good cleaning. Hope this makes more sense than the first post. Long story short ; the choke doesn’t drop when the pull knob is pushed in. Only when the choke pull is all the way indoes the jet drop. I have yet to learn how to post pictures. And I have to get the car running good before I spend the time. to learn how to post them ( but I’m taking pictures as I go ). As for the jet, all I can tell you is that the bottom is red, and the carb is an SU HS4. What colour is the bottom of your JDM carb jet ? Red ? I can put the tag info here when I get home if you like. I’m just glad to be making progress....lots of bodies on this car, and these are slowing me down because I’m trying to correct them instead of just get them working.

When you pull the choke out, it pulls the jet down not up.

Sounds like your cable may be hanging up somehow....a kink or splayed cable?

Do we know yet if you have a waxstat HS4?  you should post a picture

My Jap 89 MINI did not have a Waxstat type...

Thanks for the tip Alex. I have only glanced at them so far. For sure the carburetor has not been hitting the firewall, but I will scrutinize the bushings are closer. Have a good day Alex, Darren.

Check your engine steady bushes - 99% of the time a carb jet gets bent by hitting the bulkhead under hard acceleration with knackered bushes.

Carb problem?

On March 8 I suggested you carefully check the choke movement....

Hello all. Well, it sure took a long time, but today I’m quite sure I found the culprit that was causing my engine running troubles. If I had known a mini expert ( as someone recently suggested ) on PEI it would have saved me a LOT of grief , and I’m still not out of the woods yet ( carb strip down tomorrow because it’s off the car now- might as well I figure ). To be brief, I ended up taking the carb off, because I simply couldn’t find a visible trouble ( common with carbs I’m quite sure ). And I couldn’t manage to get the carb off without also taking the intake manifold off with it as one piece? I expect a fair amount of grief getting it all back together, but so-be-it. The car isn’t much fun if it just barely runs.

To the carb trouble : when the choke was pulled on to start from cold, it did just that...it pulled the jet up to the top. The problem was when I pushed the choke in, it did nothing until the choke knob was almost ( about 1 inch ) from the full choke position. Sticking badly.

+2 Dan ! Now I’m going to start a thread about getting the full assembly ( intake manifold + carb together ). I’m sure I’ll be muttering a few foul words, but heck, at least I’ve finally made some progress.
