I had an 850. The best thing about it? I could drive it flat out like a demon, and never attract the attention of the boys in blue.

Much more fun than who struck John. I love every engine I build and hope that never changes. Charlie and I had a heck of a time building his 850. I spent a lot of time working the carb. and duplex manifold to get it to use the same needle and give good O2 numbers as a std 1 1/2 HS 4 on a better intake. Just living the dream. Steve (CTR)

Cant believe how much traffic this is getting.  That is too cool to hear about a built up 850.  Mine was in a 70's 850 straight out of england and it was about 13 years ago and it was zippy.  Although I estimate half the body weight was gone due to rust..

Damn you are right, they were 6 X 10 Cosmic s. Had a Dixco tach and a Sun OP gauge and only ran Castrol Formula R 40 wt. with a felt filter. The sweetest smell ever. If that don't jog your memory why are we here? Steve (CTR)

I don't use wet tail cranks. and thrust can be welded up and machined.

FWIW - I have a '62 850, could be available. Wet crank, spring clutch, poor thrusts, cone syncros - the works! In west Canada though..

If I may ask what are you calling awhile ago? I had an 850 awhile ago ( about 47 years ) and recall it was fast. Block line bored for three cam bearings, bored .060 with Power Max pistons, zero decked, duplex timing set, Cooper S cam and mech. dizzy, 295 cyl head decked .125, twin 1 1/4 SUs on S intake and Cooper S exhaust. My 850 is original to my 1960 and hauls pretty well after being massaged a little. Surprisingly peppy.

Take it from someone who drove an 850 for years (all I could afford as a poor student..

Fit the 998.  You can make it look exactly like the 850 - and its quite easy to replicate the engine number if you're fussed.  And anything you might choose to spend on the 850 can be spent just as easily on the 998 for just a little extra benefit (and 998 bits are probably easier to find anyway....).

The 998 is a much nicer engine and juuuust that bit perkier....  you'll appreciate it the first time you come to a hill (it doesn't need a mountain for an 850 to run out of breath  

Similarly for the brakes ... the twin leading shoe setup will look the same (who's going to crawl underneath to check?) but works just that much better...

I have a 998 I can throw in, but I'm going with the original brakes, so would prefer the mild.  I do have the original engine, but it has an odd piston and one with some damage.  I bet it would probably run, but the odd piston cylinder has poor compression. 3 sits a few mm short at tdc.

jchomme.. I have  tossed dozens of 850cc in the trasj. in the last 20 years.. NO one wanted them until couple years ago.. you might get lucky and get a 850 cc engine for FREE.. later bc
