Thought bringing this one back up may be timely. I have decided to build two very nice 998 s one is sold and the other will be available and can be built to suit and provided on any tranny required. Last few small bores have been on four synchro magic wand. As will one of these builds. Steve (CTR)

My first mini was a 60 Austin 850 purchased not running before I ever drove a mini. Along with the car came a soiled copy of Building And Racing A 850 Mini by Clive Trickey. Still in high school I worked two jobs to fund the build and leaned on local mini friends for parts and help. Little did I know that 50 years later I'd still be building mini power units and loving it.

I've never had a running 1071 but there is no reason I can't put something together. I have a retired vintage race block, thick flange Cooper S block with all steel main caps, four bolt center main. It's bored .040 but blew a head gasket and the owner want to keep racing after it blew between 2 & 3 and torched the block a little and killed the head. It will have to be surfaced and was already at zero deck with 1275 crank stroke. I'm thinking this should be my next street engine. EN40B 1071 crank, .060 flat top pistons, lightened, polished and balanced S rods, light street flywheel and back plate, two part S balancer. Cam to be determined and I will call Nick Swift about doing a Road Rocket head based on the build spec. Steve (CTR)

Going though my cranks it looks like I have 5 Cooper S cranks and  only 4 S blocks. Only one is a FJ block which of course will end up a 1071. Having two more 1071 cranks a 970 and a 1275 I'm not sure which to build. I have five gallon bucket of S rods no 970 rods but it looks like you can buy them. I hate to think about cutting .250 off the top of these blocks at $1.00 per thou.

I have started buying new 1275 metro cranks and plan to build a few A+ short blocks once I find some more Metro rods.

Just priced a very nice complete 998 build and other than the core cost the build is about the same as any other 4 cyl. I'm currently only using the very late 998 press fit rods and pistons for 998 builds. I have a bucket of bushed 998 and 1100 rods in sets if anyone needs some. I should have rod bushings in stock and there is nothing wrong with the rods just surplus to my needs.

I'm still dealing with having to use several auto machine shops to build small bore engines. Only one shop in my area has a boring bar small enough to do them. It would be nice to have several blocks roughed out at the same time. Depending on traffic it can be a two hour round trip to the shop. I have them rough bore the block leaving .005 to be honed to finish size.

If the late 850 I have taken in trade has all three cam bearings I plan to build a way crazy 850 for old time sake.

Son Alex and daughter Liz both graduate this year time to get busy. Steve (CTR)
