There were different length belts and alternator configurations over the years. You are best just taking yours to a parts store and measuring it so you can buy the correct one imo.

yes it does, open shelf dash with round air vents on either side, no ac, just in the process of tracking down needed maintenance parts for it.
does anybody know which fan belt it would use. I have the oil and air filter now. Just looking to confirm a fan belt number to cross over to whats available here.
tks

Sounds like a great deal Les.
And a big bonus is that it's left hand steer.  Don't see too many Jap market MINIs that way.  Does it have centre binnacle dash or 2/3 dials in front of steering wheel?
Keep it off the salted roads .

Nice buy. You were lucky to find an owner that was willing to sell it that cheap at under $6,000 USD and i imagine he could only probably do it due to the fact he  bought it so many years ago when these cars were a lot cheaper especially in the Japanese market.

just picked up a 1990 Rover mini cooper Checkmate edition in black and white. Imported into Vancouver Canada about 12 yeas ago. been stored inside a heated garage for the last ten years and the collector only put 3000 kms on it. It is pristine condition with no signs of rust, even the engine bay is spotless. it has the single carb, no AC and the 998 engine, 4 speed manual. engine numbers , VIN, paint and trim codes all match to an original Checkmate. It is left hand drive as well with an SAXXL2S serial number on the inner fender
the body tag is 820S-871611A
I stole it for $8000.00 cdn dollars
wish I knew how to upload pics of it

That is a later model Balmoral interior out of a mid to late 90's car. Nice roof rack.
When repairing the door rust make sure you seal it from the inside as the water catches between the inner and outer skin and if you fail to seal it it will just come back.

Thanks, good to know Big AL.

Picking it up tonight, looked at it and drove it this past weekend and we agreed on a deal.  It did have some paint bubbling in those areas, nothing terrible.  It did drive 100% IMO.  It's this car:

Thanks for all the help!  I'm sure I'll be back w/more questions.

The issue with rust on the lower doors seems to stem from a brace behind the skin running pararalle to the bottom of the door about 2-3 inches high, most Jap spec minis l have owned had this problem

Seems the brace catches the crud inside and it rusts from there

You can buy a "short assed " lower small door skin that will cover this up

Parts for classic MINIs are far cheaper than modern cars !

If in CA I wouldn't pay more than $8,000 CAD for a very good example with 998
If in the US probably no more than $10K USD.  MkI/II always seem to collect more $ than the later MkV>

Going to look at it this weekend, will check the bottom of the doors out.  Can someone suggest a fair purchase price range?

Thanks for your help
A 998 cc Mini would have a carburetor. A fair price if in good shape would be from $10k to $12k depending where in the country it is located. If you don't know Mini's take someone with you who is knowledgeable.
That's what I was expecting as far as the price goes.  Unfortunately I don't know anyone, wish I did, that's why I'm here trying to figure out what any red flags would be...

I have an 87 manual 1275 purchased from member 'Pologround' several years ago. Car was in excellent condition when I bought it, and I've been very happy with it. I removed the A/C to declutter the engine bay a bit, plus I never used it. Paid $10k. Took care of some minor non-structural rust over last winter, and the entire car was taken down to bare metal. Car looks better with its fresh coat of paint now than it did when I bought it, and it looked very good then...ymmv.

Hard to find them even close to that price even in Japan anymore Mousy.
Boost keep the a/c the way it is if working or use one of the replacement refrigerants on the market.
2nd gear synchro's get weak, all the rubber components perish, usually the rust issues are in the doors as mentioned.
In 1990 some of the Jap spec cars were stamped with their own vin number and still had the two UK ones present. The Japanese vin starts with a 99X and is usually stamped in the trunk, the UK ones start with SAXX and are in the scuttle and either in the trunk or on the inner fender. Depending where you are registering it it could be an issue if you are using the 99x number.
If you live in California it is too new to register.

I have a 1993 Japanese spec Mini ,paid in the $3,000 range canadian . I did drive it home but certainly needed some mechanical work. Body wise mine is rust free but needed a full engine , trans and front suspension overhaul as I doubt it was ever serviced. As spitz mentioned , front Doughnuts usually collapsed. AC works a TREAT !!! All in all Im happy with mine (Not on the road yet) But hope to make it my daily driver next year.

Best of luck with yours !

Mousy

Is it an automatic? ( if so I would walk away....from experience, unless it's in really really good condition )
1275 or 998?
I think 90 was still carb'd....right?
They should be fairly rust free except possible at the bottom of the doors.  Mine (89) had the door issue as well as a couple other Jap MINIs  I've seen.
It will most likely have squashed springs in need of replacement
It will also most likely have AC.....a nice option

Is there anything to watch out for as far as these are concerned?  Are they any better or worse than any other year?  Anything special or not about JDM minis?  Any info would be appreciated, looking to purchase this vehicle soon and wanted to know what I'm getting into and how they compare to others, thanks!
