850 issue

ok I think we have a lead. Apparently an rc 40 twin box was fitted to this car with a welded on adaptor to meet the exhaust manifold. I think the weight of the exhaust is enough to tip the engine back and prevent the wand from sliding into the missing gears.

I'm not familiar with the magic wand, but I had this exact problem with my remote control a few months back. When I lifted up the rubber gaiter, the source of the problem was obvious. It was because the retainer bolts holding the gear lever retainer cup had rattled loose until the ball on the gear lever slipped out of place. (#27 and #28 on the schematic //www.minimania.com/catPage/4-25/4/25/0/Gear-Change-Up-to-1972-Not-Rod-Change )
I pushed the ball back into place and retightened the retainer bolts and all of the gears on the back half of the H came back. I did need to open it back up a few weeks later because all that rattling around had also damaged the nylon flange and the shifter seat, so those needed to be replaced.
I don't know how this works with the magic wand, though. From the schematics, it looks to have a similar setup.

I had a problem like you described with an 850. it turned out to be one motor mount.

yes, I was thinking motor mounts, but also thought the dogbone would prevent the engine from tipping backwards. Any thoughts to something internal?
Still need to chat with the owner and see if he had 2,4 and R when he was driving it.

It might loose / worn knuckle joints where the gear lever motion goes over the diff. A cow to get at with engine in the car.
Otherwise, it might be collapsed engine mounts making the power unit too low, or allowing it to lean back, so that the gear lever fouls the hole in the cabin floor or the rubber boot.
Try taking the boot off and looking at the clearance round the gear lever as well as lost motion.

looking at an 850 magic wand. I can't seem to get the shift lever into 2nd, 4th or reverse.
This is with engine off. Clutch in or not makes no difference.
It snaps into 1st and 3rd like it should.
Only thing I can think of is misaligned splines on knuckle at the top of the diff shaft.
Any thoughts to something internal that's come loose or broken?
