Frankly I think it was a good off-topic. I just had coffee with a senior engineer who had done his apprenticeship at AP in the early seventies. His version of the story, with the electron beam welder and the range of advanced development that they were up to suggests that there was more than just blokes with hammers.

Well here we are off in the woods rebuilding auto boxes and along comes Deb back on topic. You guys had me going then I looked at the tools required and what it will take to make them ( to do one for fun ) and learn to use them. Did I read about fitting std clutch for launch and backing? I'm excited to see what my current batch of 1293s with road rocket heads and 10.2 C/R, SW 5 - 07 SPI and Cooper Spec ECU will do. Steve (CTR)

I think both dash layouts were available at the time

Probably still is behind that Rokee wood type dash. FWIW all the J spec cars with a/c i have seen have had the black plastic full length dash with the two or three clocks in front of the driver unless like this one they changed it to the under dash vent set up with a binnacle which a lot of the Japanese seem to like the retro approach.

Dash is wrong for an 1989...

Should be a binnacle in front of the driver...

Steve i had heard they used to race beefed up autos way back. There is nothing wrong with them if they are serviced and adjusted correctly and on time, if you shift them manually (1275) they are quite nippy. A re build kit with bands is around $700 from jpat in the UK.

M-Tech used to have a 1380 auto iirc, and it was a complete hoot to drive.

Ultimately, the gearboxes were assembled by blokes with hammers in a factory in Birmingham... how difficult could it be ?

Reverse engineering something for disassembly, renovating it, and reassembling it correctly is always more tricky than initial assembly on a production line, but keeping in mind it was done as fast as possible to a price, they can't be that horrendous for a mechanically minded and skilled person.

At the end of the day, it's just nuts & bolts...

An ideal mini is a mini with Automatic transmission, has A/C , has steering assist(i didn't say power steering), has 5gears, and has coil over suspension, and fuel injected engine. ,forget about power windows etc, i don't need them.
minis with manual transmission are only used if you want to race or do a burn rubber on the streets.,, but if you want to do easy steady, long trips, auto transmission is the way to go....i hate shifting gears.

998cc auto with a/c wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, really slow unless you row it through the gears and if you are going to do that you are better off with a manual gear box.
The big problem with auto Mini's is their lack of servicing by the previous owner. They should have their oil and filter changed every 1500 miles which nobody seems to do plus they sit in a lot of traffic in Japan and heat is the enemy. They fail on a regular basis once exported here yes there are some good ones but they are the minority. If you really want an automatic buy a 1275cc one with service records (if possible).
BTW that car is an $8k car.

Well Its just a standard classic mini.  If you have that kind of budget (19k) might as well get an already assembled Vtec mini, well worth your money.
