I discovered that the IPO failed to install the clamping bolts on the inside levers. That, plus shimming the square peg/hole fit with ally tape, worked a treat.

Just did this on a MK1 Countryman, the square pegs were slightly loose in the square holes, shimming the holes to take up the slack fixed the problem. I used some tig rod that I hammered flat.

i was told years ago by a old BMC tech to remove the handle and put the door handle shaft in a vise and give it some heat and give it a twist to make it straight again, i have done this trick for years it works great and very easy fix

My Mk 1 Van's original outer handles have no springs. Am I missing something here? The handles have no sag at all. Apparently the latch springs are doing their job.
'66 Austin Van; 1275 .040 over; EN40B crossdrilled crank; Cam Techniques F-270-8 cam; MED modified alloy 7 port; 1.5:1 MED roller rockers; 40 DCOE carbs; rod change box; alloy 4-pot calipers...

Thanks SXS! Not sure why it sometimes goes in as a link, sometimes not!
Good point on the latches! Those springs get soft too! In fact the description for these says it's to fix "terminal door sag"!

No I think he's saying it's pretty easy to add something like a carb return spring to the interior "spoon" to help your 50+ year old handles stay up..... Kinda like what Big Al said too!
Or you can go with reproduction handles like these, with young and resilient springs:

So, you are saying there is nothing that can be done to restore to normal?

I remember fitting some springs years ago.
Rather like how a garage door spring aids in lifting.

Is there a proper fix to the perennial sagging door handles (both inside and out) on a Mk 1 Mini?
